Year in Review 2010 & 2011 Preview

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The ISF of Yale S&A has had another exciting year during 2010.  This newsletter includes summaries of a few highlighted events.  As always, you can find more details and information on these and all of our events online at www.yale.edu/silat.

We are pleased to present you with the latest updates from the International Silat Federation, led by Bapak Waleed, Leonardo Stoute.  This year Bapak has spent many months overseas in Indonesia and traveling throughout Southeast Asia, teaching, lecturing and supporting the traditional cultures.  Even as Bapak travels, his students in the United States aim to maintain the Indonesian cultural and education outreach activities of the ISFA, working with universities, students, and communities throughout the country.  As always we endeavor to preserve and share the pusaka of Silat Tuo Minang and the oldest forms of Silat, from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra, Indonesia.

Highlights in this section include pictures and write-ups from events on campus and in the community, at the Yale International Center and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. 

FEBRUARY – Bapak Waleed and ISF of Yale S&A Visit Harvard: Silat Wellness Program at Leverett House: The Leverett House Wellness Tutors invited Bapak Waleed to give a Lecture and Workshop on the Natural Healing Methods of the Minang people.

MAY – Yale Globalist Visits Jakarta: The Yale Globalist, an undergraduate-run magazine, prepared for their fall 2010 issue by traveling to Indonesia to research topics for their upcoming articles.  They sought out Bapak Waleed and the ISF of Yale S&A in advance to advise and help arrange the logisitics of their travel in Jakarta.

JULY – ISF of Yale S&A at the Indonesian Consulate in New York: Members of the ISF of Yale S&A visited the Indonesian Consulate in New York, and met with the Vice Counsel of Information and Cultural Affairs, Ms. Rina Fitriyah Wahyuningsih.

AUGUST – Stones & Bones: A Visit to the Islands of Fire at the Yale Peabody Museum: At the end of their week-long Stones & Bones summer camp, elementary school children from around the Greater New Haven area enjoyed a session with the ISF of Yale S&A, and a trip to the Islands of Fire... INDONESIA.

OCTOBER – BAPAK WALEED VISITS YALE; Tribute to Rumi: A Night of Sufi Whirling & Meditation at the Yale Int’l Ctr: With a look into another form of Spiritual Dance, Sh. Bapak Waleed invited Yale University students and staff to enjoy an evening of peaceful reflection, along with a demonstraion of the ‘Whirling’ Dance in Tribute to the mystical poet Rumi.

Silat Tuo Traditionale at Yale University: Bapak Waleed spent time with the students while visiting Yale University, leading a workshop in Silat Tuo Traditionale, the focal point of cultural arts, dance, and theater of West Sumatra, Indonesia.

ONGOING –  Community Outreach: Serving at New Haven’s Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen: ISF of Yale S&A endeavors to provide support to the community on an ongoing basis, and visited the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen todonate their time and to serve dinner on a regular basis in 2010.
